MedPanel Offers Second Profiles™ in Oncology
Study Series on Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

-- Series Utilizes MedPanel’s Online Methodology
to Evaluate Market Requirements for Drug Treatments,
Examining Efficacy, Toxicity and Quality of Life --

Cambridge, MA, August 23, 2004 – MedPanel, a leader in online medical market intelligence for the life sciences industry, today announced a new syndicated study, Profiles™in Advanced and Metastatic Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).  This study is the second of its syndicated oncology series launched earlier this year.

Profiles in Advanced and Metastatic NSCLC highlights potential opportunities for clinical and commercial advances in NSCLC drug development.   These potential opportunities are identified through the insights of opinion-leading academic and clinical research specialists, as well as from responses to a custom survey from a large body of community-based oncologists.  This report is designed to help clients understand therapeutic unmet needs and the product attributes and levels of performance that influence physicians' prescribing decisions. The report also includes a qualitative evaluation of first-, second-, and third-line agents for advanced and metastatic NSCLC.

The Profiles series examines market opportunities, key areas of product performance, and investigational agents currently in clinical trials. The studies are designed to provide in-depth analysis for organizations and companies considering the development, acquisition, or launch of a therapeutic agent for commercialization.  The first oncology study in the series is Profiles in Metastatic Breast Cancer, published in May.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women in the United States. In 2003, it is estimated that 171,900 new lung cancer cases were diagnosed, approximately 80% of which were non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Each year, more than 150,000 people die from NSCLC—more than from colon, prostate, and breast cancers combined. The median survival time for patients with advanced and metastatic NSCLC is approximately eight to ten months, a fact that clearly underscores the dramatic unmet need for clinical advance.

The methodology of the study consists of a qualitative online discussion among ten key opinion leaders (KOLs) in lung cancer, as well as a quantitative survey and a conjoint exercise completed by 100 community-based oncologists to generate insight into differences in perspective between academic and community—based physicians.  KOLs contributing to the online discussion are academic clinical oncologists who were selected ton the basis of publication history in NSCLC, participation in clinical trials, and peer recommendation.

MedPanel’s Profiles in Oncology series continues through 2004, with studies of prostate cancer and colorectal cancer to follow the current report.  Other therapeutic areas such as cardiology, psychiatry, and neurology are candidates for future Profiles series.
